Procedures - Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Over time, the effects of aging, gravity, weight loss, pregnancy, nursing, and breast feeding cause a woman's breasts and supporting skin to become loose and sag. A breast lift or mastopexy is a surgical procedure designed to reshape and reposition the breast and nipple to a more youthful position. Factors such as heavier breasts, thin tissue and also genetics may limit our ability to surgically position a woman's breast and nipples to an ideal position. However, most patients notice a significant improvement in their breasts after this procedure.

There will be scars on the breast that are permanent because the surgery involves repositioning of the nipple and breast tissue. Over time most scars fade noticeably. Rarely, a patient may experience permanent nipple numbness.

The new look of the breasts may take time to settle because of swelling that occurs with all surgery. It must also be kept in mind that the breast lift won't last forever, as the effects of gravity on our bodies eill eventually take their toll. The majority of women are extremely happy with their results, and the cosmetic benefit outweights these concerns.

Women who notice a lack of fullness as well as saggy breasts may be candidates for this surgical procedure, which involves placement of an implant at the same surgery as a breast lift. Scar patterns are similar to breast lift without implants, however, recovery from this procedure can be more extensive due to the additional surgery.

Complications are rare - but must be thoroughly discussed and considered before you decide to have surgery.

Over time, a woman's breast begin to sag and the areolas become larger. Incisions outline the area of skin to be removed and the new position for the nipple. Skin formerly located above the nipple is brought down and together to reshape the breast. Sutures close the incisions, giving the breast its new contour. After surgery, the breasts are higher and firmer, with sutures are usually located around the areola, below it, and in the crease under the breast.
